The day of Ashura
: (Hussain ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (Peace and blessings be upon him)
He was the second son of Ali ibn Abi Talib (the lion of Allah) - first Imam of Shia - and Fatimah Zahra (daughter of Muhammad, the Prophet of Allah)
.He is an important figure in Islam, as well as being the third Shia Imam and Ahl al-Kisa
Imam Hussain (pbuh) is highly regarded by Shia Muslims because he refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid (curse of Allah), the Umayyad caliph because he considered the rule of the Umayyads unjust. As a consequence, he left Medina, his home town, and traveled to Mecca to perform the annual Hajj, but left the ceremony and traveled towards Kufa. Because the people of Kufa sent letters to him, asking his help and pledging their allegiance to him.
At Karbala his caravan was intercepted by Yazid"s army. He was killed and beheaded in the Battle of Karbala in (61 AH) by Shimr Ibn Thil-Jawshan (curse of Allah), along with most of his family and companions.
Ashura (tenth day of Muharram) and is a day of mourning for Shiite Muslims. The killings at Karbala fueled the later Shiite movements.
